Stated after an independent review of #685 found the first cut silently dropped the factor for 3.8. (#671) Read off ecoinvent's own LCIA implementation workbooks, one per release: `LCIA Implementation v3.8.xlsx`, `3.9.1`, `3.10.1`, `3.11` and `3.12`, `energy resources: non-renewable` under EF v3.0 and EF v3.1. The characterisation factor for a kilogram flow under an indicator defined per megajoule is the energy content, which is why the workbook answers this question at all. ecoinvent revised this value at 3.9 following Meili et al. (2021) and rebuilt its oil and gas datasets on the new number, so a 3.8 inventory has to be converted with 3.8's figure: converting it with the later one used a heating value that release never had. The line falls exactly between 3.8 and 3.9.1, and of the seven carriers the workbooks state only this one, crude oil and mine off-gas moved -- the coals, peat and uranium cite the older source in every report and did not. (#777) 34.5 MJ per cubic metre in 3.8's workbook and 36.0 per standard cubic metre from 3.9.1 on. The two spellings under `source_unit` and the two factors line up: 3.8 is the release that ships `m3`, and the releases that ship `sm3` are the ones the 36.0 was read from. The sentence that used to stand here said ecoinvent respelled the unit at 3.9 \"without restating any amount\", and the amount was restated in that very release -- a statement about units standing in for one about releases."
